Interesting Flower? Plant?

I don't know what this plant is called, but whenever I see it, I want to stop and just gaze at it. It's so cute.

This one happened to be blooming in our neighbor's concrete yard, so I snuck a picture.

The plant has a bright orange balloon-like hollow ball hanging from it. I took this picture in the fall or sometime before that, so it's no longer in our neighbor's yard. I think they must have pulled it out.

SM, you've never lived in Japan...HOW do you know all these things???! You amaze me.

BTW, have you read any of Patricia Cornwell's books? I just finished reading another one of her books and thought you'd like reading it.

ha ha I read comic books.

Yeah, I've read several of her books; they're interesting as documentaries of real crime but her writing isn't that great. That reminds me, there was this psychologist author that wrote books about his real cases; his books were really interesting, but I forgot the name. Were you the one that recommended him?

I thought she was pretty good, since she seems to know what she's talking about. I like the way she develops her characters, but the storytelling could be better.

Are you talking about Irvin Yalom? He's a great writer/psychiatrist. Seems like he has a new book out. I should get it.
